Hark! Summary

Hark! by Ed McBain

Gloria Stanford was very sexy, very rich and very, very dead. Found in her plush, city apartment, she had been shot twice in the heart. All her credit cards and i.d. were gone but apart from that there seemed no motive at all. It's only when the detective-in-charge, Steve Carella, starts to receive bizarre cryptic notes through the mail that he realises that something bigger than a simple homicide is going on. For it seems the 'Deaf Man' is back - a notorious crook and killer who has a morbid fascination with puzzles and anagrams. Long thought dead, he's back on the loose and wants his long-hidden millions back...Thus begins a roller-coaster ride of betrayal, double-bluff and violence with an enormous golden haul at the end of it...

Hark! Reviews

An inventive and absorbing thriller CITY LIFE (MANCHESTER), 21 October McBain shows his old skill as he keeps the momentum building -- Susanna Yager DAILY TELEGRAPH, 17 October We love it... the most engrossing, subtle and accurate dialogue, to which he brings a beautifully soft comic touch. They say you should leave them wanting more. McBain always does. -- Sandy Balfour THE SPECTATOR, 9 October What a feast for McBain fans... WESTERN DAILY PRESS (BRISTOL), 25 September McBain injects a great deal of wit and originality into his inventive storyline. Many writeres try to introduce light and shade into their work in this way, but few make it succeed as well as McBain. -- Robert Colbeck YORKSHIRE EVENING POST, 9 October Another gripping and fresh tale -- no mean feat for a series that has been running for 50 years. MANCHESTER EVENING NEWS Ingenious... an incredible series. The dialogue -- wry, laconic and very much up to date -- drives the story along. IRISH TIMES, 22 January 05 An enticing literary puzzle, a teasing crime novel that is a total delight. THE SCOTSMAN, 22 Jan Very funny writing. as usual, his supporting characters are drawn quickly, and supply great dialogue, and the wisecracks of the assembled cops bring more than one wry smile. It's all a lot of fun. -- Michael Carlson CRIMETIME 2005
