In recent years, holistic, alternative or complementary therapies have been the subject of increasing interest within health care. With their emphasis on self-care and prevention of illness of the whole person rather than on a symptomatic approach, they are no longer seen as fringe or unorthodox, and are being increasingly integrated into 'orthodox' medicine. These emphases are also ones which are of growing importance in nursing, where individualised patient care is a major aim. This book introduces nurses and other health professionals to a range of therapies which can be integrated into general nursing and health care. With the exception of acupuncture, all therapies are non-invasive and may be taught to patients to generate self-care. The contributors are practitioners in their respective fields and in each case they describe the philosophy behind the therapy and its application in nursing and health care.
