New Kid, New Scene Summary

New Kid, New Scene: A Guide to Moving and Switching Schools by Debbie Glasser

Starting out as the new kid in a new school can be like performing as an extra in a movie. Kids can feel alone, pushed to the side, and unsure of where they could possibly fit in or if there is a place for them.

New Kid, New Scene gives kids the ins and outs of navigating new surroundings, making new friends (as well as staying in touch with old ones), and finding a place that feels like their own.

It is full of real-life stories from kids who have the same experience--facing a new school and new life and how they were able to survive and even thrive in their new environment. It is packed with useful advice and questions for kids when they are worried or upset and it shows them that they are a star in this new change in their life and not just an extra.

About Debbie Glasser

Debbie Glasser, PhD, is a nationally recognized psychologist, teacher, and writer who helps kids discover new ways to express their feelings and cope with change. She is the co-author of The Step-Tween Survival Guide and past chair of the National Parenting Education Network. She also publishes an online newsletter for parents called NewsForParents.org. Debbie lives in Virginia with her husband and three children.

Emily Schenck is Debbie's daughter. Emily moved with her family from Florida to Virginia the summer before starting the ninth grade. She and her mom wrote this book together because they wanted to help new kids feel at home in their new situations. Currently a college student, Emily enjoys playing tennis, watching reality TV shows, and hanging out with friends--both old and new ones.
