People Who Help Us Summary

People Who Help Us by Cooper

This book is taken from a series which introduces the reader to people who help the community through the jobs that they perform. Each book focuses on an individual member of the featured public or emergency services; the experiences of their working day are used to illustrate the importance of their role in the community. Wherever possible, care has been taken to make those experiences relevant to those of the reader. This book is about Tony, a charge nurse in an accident and emergency unit of a large hospital. The authors focus on a particular incident in which a child falls off her bike and is taken to the accident department. They use this incident to explain various procedures: being X-rayed; having a plaster cast made and having stitches. By showing how Tony helps the child in this situation, the authors hope to make the prospect of hospital treatment less traumatic for other children. There is a dual-level text, to help younger or less able readers.
