Scotland's Century Summary

Scotland's Century: The Autobiography of the Nation by Colin Bell

A new social history of Scotland in the 20th century, recalled in the memories and experiences of the people who lived it, the Scottish people themselves. The book is based on interviews from BBC Radio Scotland's major 1999 production of the same name.

Drawing on the most vibrant interviews from the hundreds recorded for BBC Scotland's principal radio series to celebrate the Millennium, Scotland's Century charts the progress of the nation through the memories and reminiscences of its people. Those interviewed include not only cardinals and judges, cabinet ministers and tycoons but also former miners, jute-workers, domestic servants and fishermen; whether the life was lived in the full glare of publicity or, more likely, with complete anonymity, each has its own, equally valid, insights to offer on living and working in Scotland this century. In essence, Scotland's Century is a collage of personal histories which collectively form the autobiography of the nation.

The interviews will be illustrated with over 100 photographs, each image having been carefully researched to expand upon and illuminate the text.

Scotland's Century is the Scottish book for the Millennium.
