Barney Goose Reviews

delightfully charming picture book

* NI4Kids Magazine *

pretty picturebook ... Treacy creates memorable visual imagery of distinctive Irish landmarks, but she pays special care to her characterisation of Barney, with his easily spotted red bobble hat. The circular structure makes for a comforting final double-page spread, which will have young readers hankering for Irish adventures of their own

* Irish Times *

just might help keep your young children (or grandchildren) happy

* The Avondhu *

Children's Books Ireland CEO Elaina Ryan recommends Barney Goose: 'lovely warm character ... sweet little bird with a red woolly hat ... follows his journey up the entire island ... seeing such lovely parts of the country as he goes' ... Especially timely as 'you can't go anywhere but it's nice to see some beautiful bits of our island'

* Ireland AM, Virgin *

I liked the part where he soared over the hills of Donegal because it made his heart happy and I'm from Donegal so it makes me happy too ... My favourite bit was when the geese flew across the Atlantic Ocean to Greenland past the Northern Lights. The Northern Lights looked cool and Barney never felt so happy ... I would give this book 10/10 for a lovely story and great illustrations' By Eilis, 3rd Class, St. Conal's National School, Narin, Portnoo, Co. Donegal

* Seomra Ranga *

In this bright, colourful adventure, we follow a young barnacle goose on his trek up the coast of Irelands' Wild Atlantic Way. Written with an easy-to-read, but none the less exciting text, even the youngest reader learns a lot about the geography and wildlife of the area and the behaviour and annual migration pattern of geese. But there's more! Woven in is a sweet story of friendship; making new friends and remembering the old; and kindness. We feel a sense of companionship with Barney, presented as a funny, interesting character. Little touches such as the red knitted hat he wears along his way give him an almost human appeal (and makes him easy to spot, for sure.) The welcome he receives as he meets up (finally) with a flock of like-minded geese is heartwarming. With its' bold palette, beautiful, expressive pictures, and contemporary design, we are given a glimpse of a natural world filled with wonder. A wonderful story, warm and adventurous; this is a book filled with delight

* Fallen Star Stories *

a charming and attractive picturebook giving lots of clever nods to tourist attractions along the Wild Atlantic Way ... the illustrations capture the blues, greens and greys of the Irish landscape beautifully

* Irish Independent *

a beautiful new children's book explores the rugged beauty of the Irish west coast, and introduces readers to young Barney Goose as he bumps into a host of Irish wildlife ... charming ... a fun, fast-paced read which your child will happily honk along with ... the illustrations re to be savoured ... Carol Ann Treacy's gorgeous artworks showcase some of the lesser spotted stars - puffins, whales, deer - of the various habitats on the western coast ... the quality of illustrations in this hardback edition comes as no surprise as it is a hallmark of publisher O'Brien Press

* Connaught Telegraph, Anglo Celt, Westmeath Examiner, Westmeath Independent, Meath Chronicle *

elegantly-illustrated exploration of the wildlife of the Wild Atlantic Way, from Kilkenny's Carol Ann Treacy, will be a likely hit both at home and with visitors to Ireland

* Evening Echo *

This wet and windy journey follows the playful Barney and his red knitted hat on a trip to see the great flora and fauna of the Wild Atlantic Way. Carol Ann Treacy's flair for maximalist illustration packs every page with landmarks, animals and imagery that fully immerses the reader in every spread. This book will transport the reader to the west coast and is perfect for curious young explorers
