The Sporting Scot Summary

The Sporting Scot: An Anthology of Scottish Sport by Brian D. Osborne

The Sporting Scot reveals the immense diversity and heroics of sportsmen and women in Scotland and is a wonderful celebration of the Scots' literary love affair with sport. With a selection of writing from novels, short stories and light verse, together with some memorable sports journalism, it looks at the Scots' contribution to world sports and games as part of Western culture, and the important part that sport has played, and continues to play, in the life of the nation. Covering the whole gamut of sport, from football, golf and rugby to cricket, tennis, shinty and the gentler world of bowls and angling (and much more besides), The Sporting Scot is a wide-ranging, amusing and informative collection of writing by some notable Scottish (and non-Scottish) writers, including John Buchan, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, A. J. Cronin, Don DeLillo, Hugh and William McIlvanney, and Sir Walter Scott.
