The Viking Atlas of World War I Summary

The Viking Atlas of World War I by Anthony Livesey

"The Viking Atlas of World War I" traces the development of all the major campaigns of the war. It covers China, Africa, the Middle East and the Balkans, as well as the Eastern, Western and Italian fronts, and pays special attention to the impact of the war on the British and French colonial empires. Accompanying text and map annotations offer new insights into military operations and tactics. Detailed introductions set the scene, showing the development of international rivalries and alliances since 1870, the arms race, and the political and strategic conditions in the build up to the war. The atlas also looks at the broader implications of the war: changes in civilian attitudes, the role of pacifists, the changing status of women and the social, political and economic effects of the war. An extended conclusion covers the peace settlement of 1919-25. The main part of the atlas is divided into five sections by year with the individual actions and campaigns within each section covered by map spreads. The maps are keyed and annotated in such a way that they can be read independently of the text, and cross-referencing allows the action on a particular front to be followed from year to year.
