About Anne Cawthorn (Macmillan Living Well Specialist Practitioner, The Living Well Centre, Blythe House Hospice, High Peak, Derbyshire, UK)

Anne worked as a nurse and lecturer in rehabilitation for 25 years. She moved into the field of cancer and palliative care thirteen years ago when she took up the post as Complementary Therapy Coordinator at the Neil Cliffe Cancer Centre and St Ann's Hospice. In 2000 Anne took up a joint post working as a Lecturer Practitioner with the Psycho- oncology team at the Christie Hospital and the University of Manchester. She worked closely with Peter and has been involved in the integration of innovative psychological techniques and complementary therapies into the field of cancer rehabilitation.Her teaching role involved being course leader for the cancer, palliative care and communications in practice modules. Her additional areas of interest include teaching healthcare professional to assess and manage patients sexual and body image concerns and teaching techniques to manage anxiety and phobias. She is currently working as a Macmillan Specialist Practitioner coordinating the Living Well with Cancer Service at Blythe House Hospice in the High Peak. Peter is the Clinical Lead for Complementary Therapies (CTs) at The Christie NHS Foundation Trust Manchester and University Reader in Integrated Health at the University of Derby (Buxton Campus). He is a registered nurse, and has worked in intensive care, neurology and oncology. Peter has an MA in Medical Ethics and has completed a PhD project examining reflexology vs. relaxation training for people with MS. In 2003 the Complementary Therapy team at the Christie received the prestigious Prince of Wales's Good Practice Award. In 2004 the team won the Dept of Health's Manchester and Regional Innovations Awards in Long-term Care. In 2005 Peter was given the National Public Servant Award hosted by the Guardian Newspaper. The team is currently working on a number of research and audit projects exploring outcomes for acupuncture, hypnotherapy, aromatherapy, creative imagery/relaxation and reflexology. Peter has published widely and speaks regularly at conferences and study days.
