Battle for the British Grand Prix Summary

Battle for the British Grand Prix: The Inside Story of the Fight to Save Britain's Biggest Motor Race by Alan Henry

The British Grand Prix is the oldest event on the World Championship calendar and the feud over its future, now secured, went on for more than ten years. This is the full story, told from the inside, of the business and personal battles between the British Racing Drivers Club, the organisers of the race, and Bernie Ecclestone, Formula 1's commercial rights holder. It is a story that has it all, combining high-octane personal jealousies (Sir Jackie Stewart and Bernie Ecclestone) and high finance told by a journalist with access to all the characters involved, and who himself served for two years as a BRDC director at the height of this drama.

The second attempt to bring down the BRDC came in 2008, when Ecclestone did a 17-year deal with Donington that threatened to put Silverstone out of business as an F1 venue, until the finances of Donington Ventures unravelled. In-depth analysis of the two big issues behind Bernie's battle with the blue blazers of the BRDC: modernisation of Silverstone and the fees the circuit could afford to pay. Publication in July 2010 marks the 60th anniversary of the British Grand Prix - the original race was held at Silverstone in 1950 in the first year of the Formula 1 World Championship.
