It was along the Western Front, the trench line stretching from the North Sea to the Swiss border, that most of nine million soldiers from the United Kingdom and British Empire who enlisted during World War I served, and where most of the 947,000 who were killed met their deaths. Linked to a BBC2 television series, this book follows the story of the Western Front in a format which is both chronological and thematic, whilst also focusing on particular episodes to highlight more general topics.
