Africa's Elephant Zusammenfassung

Africa's Elephant Martin Meredith

Elephants have fascinated man since early civilization. They have been used as symbols of wisdom and power; they have featured in myths and religions, and appeared on coins, in architecture and in folklore. Yet elephant history has been dominated by periods of brutality and persecution, used in gladiatorial combat; as weapons of war (most notably by Hannibal) and for their ivory, prized since ancient times as a symbol of wealth and status. As the ivory trade continued there are now only five countires with sizable elephant populations, where a few hundred years ago there were 46 - before the European hunters arrived. This is a biography about the African elephant.

Africa's Elephant Bewertungen

1 'His biography of the African elephant is affectionate, touching and timely' - Newcastle Journal 2 'An insight into modern Africa... Martin Meredith's popular historical account draws elegantly from ancient texts, accounts of 19th-century ivory traders and the work of a new breed of scientists. His story is both sad and shaming'-Economist 3 'Martin Meredith's biography of the African elephant is as much about the relationship between man and elephant as it is about the elephants themselves. There's plenty of history here, some mythology, some biology and some ecopolitics... It's hard not to read it without a deep sense of shame' - Sunday Telegraph 4 'An engaging book' - SX 5 'Good to read and give your brain a rest from egotistical, internal angst' - This is Bristol
