The reader is taken through the basic anaesthetic sequence of pre-operative assessment, intra-operative management and post-operative care for both forms of surgery in the adult. The information is presented in a straightforward manner enabling the reader to easily assimilate the information and practice the techniques. Selected references are included to support the more controversial areas of practice, and to illustrate the development of cardiothoracic anaesthesia.
