Sedimentology and Stratigraphy Zusammenfassung

Sedimentology and Stratigraphy Gary Nichols (Royal Holloway University of London)

The record of tectonic and climatic processes through geological time is held within sedimentary rocks along with evidence for the evolution of life on Earth. The study of the formation, transport and deposition of material to form fundamental part of the Earth sciences. "Sedimentology and Stratigraphy" aims to provide students who are starting to study geology at university level with an introduction to the continuum of scales of observation and interpretation which lie between the formation of a grain of sand and a fill of sedimentary basin. In the first section of this book, the auhtor treats the formation and transport of sediment in a largely descriptive manner and introduces the concepts of environments and facies. The fuill spectrum of continental and marine sedimentary environments is then covered in a series of chapters which consider the depositional processes and products which may be considered to be characteristic fior each setting. In the final part, the principles of stratigraphy and interpretation of the fill of sedimenatry basins are considered. The text and illustrations are designed to be accessible to those completely new to the subject whilst at the same time the book covers the concepts and terminology used in more advanced work.

Sedimentology and Stratigraphy Bewertungen

"Altogether an enjoyable read. I would recommend Gary Nichols' book to anyone who intends to spend the rest of their life contemplating rocks, at whatever level. GBP26.50 is a reasonable price to pay for a concise and uncluttered companion to future studies." Anne Morton, The OUGS Journal, Symposium Edition 2001 "...this book caught my attention with its fine photographs and discussions of sedimentary rocks...Nichols has written a pleasurable book..." Journal of Sedimentary Research

Über Gary Nichols (Royal Holloway University of London)

Gary Nichols teaches sedimentology and stratigraphy at Royal Holloway University of London, UK, and has also recently taught courses at the University Centre on Svalbard, Norway. His research interests in the analysis of facies and sedimentary basins have taken him to every continent, providing experience of a wide range of sedimentary rocks types of different ages in a variety of depositional settings.
