Who Is This Man?: Christ in the Renewal of the Church Dr. Jonathan Baker

One of the concerns of Archbishop Rowan Williams has been for theological renewal in the Christian Churches. Indeed he has published some extremely original works of theology himself recently. This book reflects one theme for theological renewal- Christology. The authors included are from the Catholic tradition and they consider Christology to be crucial. The Oxford Movement was above all concerned with the renewal of Incarnartional theology. The study of the person of Christ and in particular the union in him of the Divine and human nature is of the greatest importance today as Christians face the challenges of secularism and relativism. The Gospels indicate that the historical Christ claimed to be both God and man and the earliest Christians regarded him as such. This has been watered down in much Protestant theology. Schliermacher for example stated that the Divinity of Christ lay in His consciousness of a unique relation to God. To the authors of this book, this is wholly inadequate and devoid of any sacramental power. There is also an important spiritual dimension to this book. Christians believe that God revealed Himself in Christ. He took upon Himself the horrifyingly destructive forces which lie latent in all of us. Christ cannot be of any real concern to those whom God has not yet called into consciousness of the darkness that is within them. This profound book will cause much debate and may well have a lasting influence on the way people think.

Who Is This Man? Bewertungen

It should be purchased by seminaries and larger university and college libraries, especially where there is interest in the relationships between Anglo-Catholics and Roman Catholics. -Cecil R. White, Catholic Library World, Vol. 78, No2, December 2007 -- Cecil R. White
Although all of the selections deal with the titular christological theme in their own way, this volume is fundamentally about ecclesiology. Its lasting relevance will consist therefore less in its contribution to Christology than it will as a record of the struggles of the Anglican Communion to articulate a coherent self-identity in the face of intradenominational polarization. The more avowedly Catholic voices in the volume constitute an eloquent and sensitive account of a theological and theo-ethical perspective often given short shrift within the academy. Readers interested in engaging with the issues at stake will find this volume to be a valuable contribution to the accounting of the continuing formation of modern Anglican identity. -- Religious Studies Review
'thrilled, I was, at Barry Swain's contribution...I marvelled at his exploration of different attitudes...Who is this man? proved a varied and challenging read.' Simon Richiardi, Church of England Newspaper, 24/11/2006 -- Simon Richiardi * Church of England Newspaper *
'Who is this Man?... displays vigour and intellectual calibre.' - Colin Podmore, Church Times -- Colin Podmore * Church Times *
'This collection of essays and devotional material...does give us all some hope...edited to a standard rarely seen in books today...it is a valuable record of the events of the Stand up for Jesus conference.' ~ Philip Corbett, New Directions, November 2006 -- Philip Corbett * New Directions *
This book is remarkable in its scope and is effective not only in highlighting the work of SSC, but also in challenging the reader to think afresh about what it means to be Catholic in the Church today * Quarterly Review of the Community Resurrection *
