Illustrations of Scottish domestic interiors from the archive of the National Monuments Record of Scotland are included in the text, in order to illustrate the facades of private houses, including towerhouses and tenements, castles and a thatched croft, flats in Edinburgh's Georgian New Town and a villa in Glasgow's West End. Houses open to the public are also included in the discussion in order to examine the various elements that make Scottish interiors unique in Europe.
