Jack and Boo's Bucket of Treasures Reviews

Sure to become a firm family favourite! -- The Bookseller's, We Love This Book Delightful children's book - a wonderful poetic exploration of the beach, and the delights a child can find there. The photographs and cartoon figures delightfully complement each other, giving a bright colourful feel to the book. The book finishes with a great Beach spotter guide and Family beach ideas. We will definitely be taking this book with us on our family holiday this Easter. -- PaulG The book would be great to take to the beach with small children, to read the story, do some of the beach activities suggested in the book, collect their own bucket of treasures and then use the spotter's guide to identify what they have found. -- Fantastic Reads Book Blog What a delightful book, in so many ways. Simple, old-fashioned values, teaching young children to discover and embrace the joy of beachcombing, which will stay with readers for the rest of their lives. In our materialistic age, when kids have so much branded rubbish thrust upon them by TV adverts and peer pressure, how refreshing to have the reminder - and for adults as much as children - of what treasure can be found on the beach. Beautiful, evocative photos, with superimposed sketches of the two characters Jack and Boo to make the idea more accessible to small children, and lyrical prose, often alliterative, with a huge number of words beginning with s that soften the narrative and make it sound sing-song and sealike. Gently educational re the proper names for things they might find, interspersed with playful imaginings too, suggesting seaglass is a lost jewel from a mermaid's purse (next to a sketch of little Boo dressed as a mermaid. Buy this book in anticipation of a beach holiday, to prepare to make the most of one's time on the beach (so much more to do than just make sandcastles and swim!), and to use to recall past holidays in the depths of winter. A treasure in itself. -- Debbie Young, author. What I particularly like about this book is the layout of the text. Similar to other picture books it has just a few sentences on each page. In this case, it's just one long sentence separated onto different lines so it reads almost like a poem. The end result is you really read the words and get a feel for the sea as if you're really there. -- 5minutespeace's Children's Book Blog I like the way this book is illustrated - colourful children are superimposed on photos of seaside views, making this an unusual book. Join Jack and Boo as they spend a day searching for treasure washed up by the tide onto the beach. This is an ideal book for children to take when they go on the beach - as well as an enjoyable story, each page illustrates some of the common things found on beaches. It perfectly captures the excitement children feel when exploring and highlights how much fun can be had on the shores of our own country. Try out the ideas at the end of the book with your own family. -- Parents in Touch This book was such a lovely blast from the past ! As soon as it arrived and I started flicking through the pages, I squealed ooooh look, it's Nanny and Grandad's beach !. Some of the photos are taken on Bexhill beach, just a few miles along the coast from my hometown of Hastings, so I recognised the views towards Beachy Head. This nostalgia continued as I read the story to 6-year-old Juliette. The beach activities - rockpooling, beachcombing, pebble-skimming - are all exactly the kinds of things I used to do on the beach as a child. It even mentions things that I always did as my guilty secrets but thought nobody else did, like popping the air bubbles in bladderwrack seaweed ! -- Mad House Family Review blog
