Summary

As she says goodbye to her forensic pathology practice in South Carolina, Kay Scarpetta begins her new assignment in New York City. She is asked by the NYPD to visit a patient called Oscar Bane who resides in a psychiatric ward. Bane has been injured and has requested her by name. When she arrives to examine him he tells her he was injured during the course of a murder, that he did not commit this murder, and that he is being watched by the real killer.
