THE Kairos Reviews

This is an absolutely irresistible book that will be hard to put down and the reader will be pleased to discover that this is the first of a new series, so that sinking feeling of having finished a great book will be replaced by the delight of discovering that there is more to come. The opening chapter of the book gives little inkling of the power contained within its pages, as it sets the scene in a sleepy country village, where 12-year-old Joel arrives to spend the Easter holidays with his grandad. Following the initial scene setting, the book explodes into a gripping, rollercoaster adventure as Joel and his two best friends, Peter (12) and Tamara (10) discover the Kairos - and a place and life they never could have imagined - even in their wildest dreams! Then, empowered by this new knowledge and understanding, the children embark on the missions assigned to them, to make a positive difference in this lost and broken world. Kairos is a Greek word meaning an opportune moment in time. However, in this series the Kairos is a secret group of 150 special children, between the ages of 10 and 15, of diverse cultures and from many countries but with one desire in common - to help create a better world. Membership of the group is strictly by invitation, so unless you are a child between the ages of 10 and 15 and are invited to join you would not even be aware of the group's existence. Even the most fervent Kairos child, on reaching the age of 16, would have no memory of the group or any of the perilous missions in which they had been engaged, because on reaching the age of 16, every Kairos child has their memory of all things Kairos erased. The story centres around Joel, a twelve-year-old boy, and his three friends: Peter, (also 12) Tamara, (10) and Maite (15) with the latter being an intriguing mentor to the first three. The children enjoy great and loyal relationships; the way they interact with each other is very natural and touchingly portrayed by the author. The children are involved in serious missions, fraught with danger, which if successful will have a profound and positive effect on the world, and their bravery shines through as they strive to overcome all manner of obstacles because of what is at stake. The author includes a powerful and gripping mix of action, suspense, drama and delightful humour. Along the way, Joel and his friends discover secrets and power they could never have even imagined! They are helped and protected by the ravens, Maggi and Magee, who are in fact angels in raven's disguise, and these endearing guardians are controlled by Maguff - a superintendent angel with an authoritarian and regimental bearing, who always appears in the form of a large, formidable golden eagle. Following two miraculous events, the children are thrown in at the deep end as their first proper mission is to retrieve damning evidence to facilitate the capture and conviction of a nefarious group of drug dealers. The ring leader of these criminals is the very man responsible for the death of Joel's dad, which everyone initially believed had been a tragic accident. Despite the children's lives being at risk, they courageously continue with the mission for the great good that success will bring in removing these dangerous criminals from the streets. The children witness and experience significant events and learn valuable lessons along the way. The detective involved in bringing these criminals to justice has no idea of how he has been helped, not just by the children but also by the angels involved. Only the Kairos children are able to communicate with the ravens, nevertheless there are a number of exciting and sometimes humorous exchanges between the children, the ravens and the detective who, of course, cannot hear the ravens' side of the conversations. Joel believes he has found his true love in Maite, their initial mentor in the Kairos, but as she becomes16 on the morning after the Kairos Ball, at the end of the Easter holidays, she has no choice but to leave the Kairos and her memory of it is then erased. This is true of all the members when they reach 16, with no exceptions, because the Kairos is strictly the domain of children between the ages of 10 and 15. Grandad is a loveable, quirky, endearing character who is used, in part, by the author to debunk myths and reveal truths that have perplexed mankind for centuries. At the end of the book Joel has an unexpected meeting with the King of Glory, who gives Joel an insight into the plan for his life - and the experience changes him forever. The author may very well have produced something that could take the book world by storm and The Kairos will likely be appreciated, enjoyed and discussed the world over. That this is a page-turner, there can be no doubt - it will be a much read, much discussed and much-loved book.
