How To Run The Country Manual Summary

How To Run The Country Manual: The step-by-step guide to running Great Britain by Ian Rock

Managing Britain is a complex operation - one that dramatically affects all of our lives as citizens. Now Haynes have put together a team of experts to write a `workshop manual' that explains in plain English how the system works - a `nuts & bolts' layperson's guide to all the big questions that concern people - which politicians rarely give straight answers to. Split into extensive sections on economics, politics and society, Haynes show how to strip down the machinery of state and give it a good servicing!

About Ian Rock

James Meadway is the senior economist at New Economics Foundation and a former policy advisor at HM Treasury and the Royal Society. James writes for the national press, including The Guardian and New Statesman, and is co-author of Crisis in the Eurozone.

Kevin Albertson is Principal Lecturer in Economics at Manchester Metropolitan University, and co-author of critically acclaimed books including Justice With Reason.

Ian Rock came up with the original idea for this manual and has helped ensure the content is balanced, down-to-earth, and written in an easy-to-understand style. Ian studied Economics at Degree level before embarking on a successful career in publishing and property, and is author of several Haynes manuals.

Chris Fox is a Professor in the Sociology Department at Manchester Metropolitan University where he runs a research unit. He is particularly interested in crime and the criminal justice system and has published extensively on these topics.

Table of Contents

The concept of a 'How To Run The Country' Manual is immediately appealing because of the paradox of applying practical 'nuts & bolts' treatment to a subject that is conventionally regarded as highbrow. There is something deeply gratifying, even droll, about 'those practical folk at Haynes' coming up with a common sense 'car manual' showing the Powers That Be how to do their job! The 'everyman' theme also chimes with popular TV shows (X-Factor, Dancing On Ice etc) which show that ordinary people can achieve amazing things with the right sort of guidance. Why Haynes? No other publisher could carry off this project because the essence of the book is the delightful contrast of a conventionally esoteric subject being given the full 'hands on' Haynes Manual treatment - practical books that are renowned for explaining complex subjects and in an interesting, understandable and enjoyable way.
