This is the first title in a series of resource books aimed at providing teachers with all they need to know - and all they need - in order to use portfolios for assessing pupils' progress and teaching needs. Portfolio assessment is a system for evaluating a pupil, based on a collection of that child's work which is gathered and negotiated by both teacher and pupil. This method of teaching is ideally suited to the newly revised National Curriculum with its broad end of Key Stage level descriptors. This book, aimed at teachers of Key Stage two pupils and Scottish Level C-E pupils, combines comprehensive teachers' notes that explain what portfolio assessment is, how to get started and how to keep going with photocopiable resources to support the process and the English curriculum. Creating literacy portfolios will enable teachers to: observe, analyze and document individual children's growth in reading, writing, speaking and listening; be more efficient and systematic in gathering information about children's attitudes and performances; assess for the purpose of planning for individual needs; provide built-in progression; provide the school and parents with a permanent record of a child's overall performance over the whole primary school career; and promote pupil self-evaluation and provide a means for pupils to see their own growth.
