So many people start their crochet journey with a granny square, often literally learning at the knee of their grandmotherWhile some may regard it as old-fashioned, the humble granny has seen a huge revival in recent times. This is partly because they are so quick and easy to crochet, which makes them very appealing for busy crafters, or those who like something small and portable for crocheting on the go. In their new book, Barbara Wilder and Beatrice Simon have set out to show just how versatile a granny project can be, with variations on the classic square including hexagons, triangles, pentagons and circles. There are also 30 new techniques to improve and diversify your granny square making. The book also includes 26 vibrant projects to try out your new skills on, with makes that are easy enough for beginners but including techniques that will capture the imagination of the more advanced crocheter. Some of our favourite projects include the hacky sack balls - perfect to take to the beach this summer - or why not let low-tech craft combine with your hi-tech device by making the stylish fl oral tablet case? For the home there are pretty baskets, a table lamp cover, a stylish blossom rug, potholders and a bright blanket for those wanting a larger project. This is a lovely collection of designs, with a useful range of beautifully illustrated techniques that ensure even a total beginner can have a go.

Making granny squares is a classic technique which uses crochet in the round to produce distinctive multicoloured shapes, sewn together into larger pieces. Although they are traditionally square, Simon and Wilder refresh the practice by introducing a whole range of different shapes - from hexagons and triangles, to stars and flowers. This beautiful book features individual patterns for each motif, followed by several different projects to make, primarily for the home. The designs and colours are simply beautiful - you'll be amazed at how contemporary the traditional craft can look!

Beatrice Simon and Barbara Wilder are two American crochet addicts with a penchant for the classic granny square. They have compiled 50 projects and techniques starting with instructions for 15 basic motifs - from the basic square to pentagon with flower, a rose triangle and, one for more experienced crocheters, the paisley. The instructions are easy to follow, but bear in mind that this is an American title with terminology differences, so don't get your sc's and dc's in a twist. Whatever your taste you'll find a project you'll like in this book.
