Janey Lowes qualified as a vet in 2012. Two years later she left her home in County Durham to go travelling and, visiting Sri Lanka, she was horrified to see the state of many of the island's dogs, in particular the three million strays. She decided to move to the island, raised GBP10,000 to get started, set up a charity called WECare Worldwide, and began work. Since then, she has saved or improved the lives of hundreds of dogs.
