Summary

A neglected adolescent meets a British expatriate old enough to be his father. Fantasising about escaping their lives in Chicago, they embark on a road trip to Brazil. But neither can overcome the isolation of being gay in the age of AIDS.

Bruiser Summary

Bruiser by Richard House

Elegiac and lyrical, Bruiser is the story of a love between two men wary of emotional commitment. Adrian fends for himself as a waiter, boxer and hustler until he meets Paul, a lonely British expatriate old enough to be his father. Rejecting their lives in Chicago, they embark together on a road trip to Brazil. On the journey, they both find that they cannot abandon the fear of intimacy. Richard House's first novel is a sensual portrayal of lives lived on the margins.

Bruiser Reviews

?Richard House's sad, beautifully crafted novel is a triumph of story telling. His engaging characters leave the reader both astonished and hopeful. Here is an amazing writer.? David Sedaris ?Its dark mood of self-examination, its deathly reticence and its dream-like progression all make for a very intimate and disturbing work of considerable bleak passion. Bruiser is the best gay novel I have read this year.? The Independent ?This intelligent debut novel is an insightful, intimate exploration of mismatched couplings and the things we do for love?
