The author looks at his career, which was not only long and controversial, but was also as much concerned with domestic issues and party politics as it was with waging war and international statesmanship. It is a study of Churchill on the home front, from his first election to Parliament to the end of his last ministry. At different times, he held the three greatest domestic portfolios: President of the Board of Trade, Home Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer, and was responsible for a vast amount of domestic legislation.
