Summary

This is an edition with commentary of six poems by the Roman poet Ovid. These are the letters, as Ovid imagined them, exchanged between three famous pairs of lovers, Paris and Helen of Troy, Hero and Leander, and Acontius and Cydippe. This is the first commentary in any language since 1898 on these 'double' letters.

Ovid: Heroides XVI-XXI Summary

Ovid: Heroides XVI-XXI by Ovid

This is Ovid's wittily imagined version of the letters exchanged by three famous pairs of lovers. Heroides XVI-XXI constitute an artfully constructed triptych: Hero and Leander's tragedy of high romance and fleeting happiness framed by two ironic comedies, that of Paris and Helen distinctly black, that of Acontius and Cydippe ending the book on a note of tantalising ambiguity. This is the first edition of these poems with commentary in any language since 1898. It provides a substantially improved text, together with all the guidance needed by students for the understanding of Ovid's Latin and the appreciation of his poetic art. The Introduction offers the first adequate discussion ever published of the poet's treatment of his literary sources and models, and deals succinctly but decisively with the question of authorship.

Ovid: Heroides XVI-XXI Reviews

"...the volume provides ample expert assistance for understanding what is going on in each sentence, and in each poem..." James J. O'Hara, New England Classical Journal
"...we owe in great part to Kenney's own sound editorial efforts. Teachers and students should get a lot from this text, which earns admiration for both Ovid and Kenney." William S. Anderson, Classical World
"...the most advanced undergraduates would profit from using this commentary. For them, for their teachers, and for all professional Latinists, kenney has admirably fulfilled his aim -- `to help others to appreciate these brilliant poems as warmly' as he himself does." Betty Rose Nagle, The Classical Outlook
"Teachers and students should get a lot from this text, which earns admiration for both Ovid and Kenney." William S. Anderson, Classical World
