Bags Of Tunes for Cello Reviews

This book starts off with melodies at a similar level to the Prep Test, many of which are traditional English and several more of which are Mary Cohen's own creations. I thick youngsters would share my enthusiasm for the Swedish, German, Dutch and especially Slovakian fold tunes that provide the majority of the material. Their piquant rhythms (try 'Fair Katya') and turns of phrase ('Dinner's ready!') are less familiar to us than their English relations, but equally graspable by a young ear. There are no bowing or fingering suggestions so the youngsters have to be able to think for themselves - fabulous.

Music Teacher Magazine, March 2009

These really useful volumes are cello version of the violin books from Mary Cohen's successful 'Superseries'. Laid out to Faber's highest standard, both books are admirably uncluttered on the page. Bags of Tunes contains an attractive selection of 42 short pieces, some original, some well-known, and includes a few famous rounds for group lesson fun. There is progression in terms of length and rhythmic difficulty, while the basic 0134 finger pattern is maintained throughout, and bowing and dynamics are left to the teacher.
