Widower's House Summary

Widower's House by John Bayley

Since the death in 1998 of his wife, the novelist and philosopher Iris Murdoch, John Bayley has given much thought to adjusting to his new, single status. As the carer of a victim of Alzheiner's, his was in many ways a double-bereavement as Iris, in the sense of the person who John Bayley met and married, very slowly departed this world some years before her physical death. This book provides a meditation on his bereavement and loss written in John Bayley's sensitive and amusing style of reminiscence.

Widower's House Reviews

"Praise for Iris and the Friends: 'The abiding impression this books makes is of an enduring and understanding love - a remarkable true marriage' Alan Massie, Daily Telegraph 'The devastating honesty of the book will be helpful to others in a similar position, I have no doubt about the at, but funnily enough the reason I shall keep dipping into it and re-reading it is for the masterly and subtle ways in which Bayley describes the workings of the inner life... [Bayley is] an extraordinarily distinctive and original man' A.N. Wilson, Daily Mail. Praise for Iris: A Memoir 'One of the most moving, and therefore gripping, love letters ever written' Daily Telegraph 'Love has everything and nothing to do with it. John Bayley has set the gold standard for a debased currency' Guardian."
