The author first went to Bosnia in October 1992 after petitioning her editor for months - there was always an excuse; it was too dangerous, there was already someone there (always a man), not enough interest. Although she had worked in war regions before nothing prepared her for what she saw there or for the emotional and physical shock of the conflict. From the beginning she shunned the male press pack as they followed the soldiers around. She was determined to seek out the war's human face. This book looks at the human-suffering of the war.
