In 19th-century Cornwall, well-born Harlyn Tremayne, strong-willed and proud, sinks to penury and stowing away, rather than marry the sinister Sir Henry Trevellyan, who seeks her hand in return for helping her father out of debt. But on board ship, she is treated like a dockside harlot.
