Summary

In this reprint of a classic book the theory of feline art is taken seriously, showing its infinite variety and setting it within a coherent framework from ancient times to the present day. As well as being a photographic record of the artistic cat at work, the authors also explain many aspects of everyday cat behaviour.

Why Cats Paint Summary

Why Cats Paint: A Theory of Feline Aesthetics by Heather Busch

The fact that some domestic cats are able to make marks with paint has always been explained by biologists as instinctive territorial marking behaviour. Now, this book presents a theory based on recent evidence that supports the view that some cat's marks are aesthetically motivated.

About Heather Busch

Heather Busch is a recognised authority on the photography and curation of cat art and is credited with opening the world's first gallery devoted exclusively to the display of cat painting. This is Heather Busch's first photographic book, but as a well-known ew Zealand painter and sculptor, she has had several books of original work published, including Kokigami and Within and Beyond

Burton Silver is a New Zealand based writer and art critic who has been instrumental in organising a number of important solo exhibitions of cat painting, including Smokey at the On Top Gallery in New York. Burton Silver is no stranger to unusual art forms and has written books on subjects as diverse as the aesthetics of ornithological dejecta and contemporary erotic Japanese paper sculpture.
