Summary

Cassy's only image of her father is the photo he left behind, long ago, when he abandoned her. Where did he go? What made him leave her beautiful, simple mother? Cassy has never dared ask the question aloud-in case the answer is dangerous. But some questions are better left unanswered . . .

Wolf Summary

Wolf by Gillian Cross

Cassy lives with her granny, until the night that she hears strange footsteps coming into their flat. The next morning, she is packed off to her mum's - a squat in London that her beautiful, simple mother shares with a couple of actors. Cassy does her best to throw herself into her mother's life, even agreeing to take part in their travelling show called 'Wolf'. But she can't ever get rid of the feeling that something is following her, and something bad is going to happen. Her fear grows as time passes, until Cassy knows she must face up to her past: who her father is, why he left and where he has gone. What she doesn't know is that some questions are better left unanswered...

Wolf Reviews

Wolf is an outstanding achievement. * TES *
The book is alive and real, and keeps [children] turning the pages till the end, and keeps them thinking about the story long after the book is finished. * Books for Keeps *
Richly imaginative * Mail on Sunday *
Cross subtly intertwines complex themes while building up characterisation, balancing the real-life horror of terrorism with pragmatism and mysticism. * Time Out *
Beautifully written, rich in imagery and clever in construction. * Children's Books Ireland *

A thrilling adventure story * She magazine *
A really haunting novel from Gillian Cross. * The Guardian *
