Kyd invented the genre of the revenge tragedy, whose ghosts baying for blood, violent extremism and powerful rhetoric eventually led toHamlet. His 'Machiavellian' villain Lorenzo decisively influenced characters like Iago.

About Emma Smith

Thomas Kyd (1558-1594) is associated with a leading theatrical company, the Queen's Men. In 1593 both Kyd and Marlowe were arrested, and Kyd was imprisoned and tortured - his career never recovered.
Emma Smith is Fellow of All Souls College, Oxfordand is currently working on a history of Shakespeare's Henry V.
