Lady Chatterley's Lover Summary

Lady Chatterley's Lover by D. H. Lawrence

Banned in 1928, and when it was published here in 1960, this frank depiction of a young woman's sensual awakening was at the centre of a sensational obscenity trial in 1963.

Constance Chatterley is deeply unhappy; married to an invalid, she is almost as inwardly paralysed as her husband Clifford is paralysed below the waist. Oppressed by her dreary life, she finds refuge and regeneration in the arms of Mellors the game-keeper. But can she break out against the constraints of society, and yield to her instinctive desire for him?

About D. H. Lawrence

D.H. Lawrence was born in 1885 in Nottingham, into a miner's family. He trained as a teacher, but had his first book, THE WHITE PEACOCK, published in 1908 after the death of his beloved mother. Illness forced him to give up teaching, and he travelled round Europe with his German wife Frieda. He died in France in 1930, but was amazingly prolific. His novels include SONS AND LOVERS, THE RAINBOW, and WOMEN IN LOVE, and many more short stories, poems, plays, and essays.
