Concrete Chips Summary

Concrete Chips by Bali Rai

This is where we meet the whole gang, but Concrete Chips is told from Grace's point of view...Dean and Grace are totally fed up of always ending up last in the dinner queue, just because their class is furthest away from the dinner hall! They're the ones who end up with 'concrete chips' and cold peas. Bad! But Dean and Grace come up with a wicked plan! If you join a 'social club' at school, you always get to go to dinner first so that you can spend the rest of the lunch hour learning....chess, or whatever. Bingo! No more concrete chips. One by one the rest of the gang enrol for classes too, but then Mr 'The Enemy' Herbert gets suspicious - after all, it's quite obvious that none of the lazy six are there to take part and learn... the game's up and the gang are busted. Bummer. They just have to hope they get another inspired brainwave to avoid Herbert's punishment. But what?

About Bali Rai

Bali Rai was working in a bar in Leicester while he wrote his first novel, Unarranged Marriage, which went on to receive great critical acclaim and three awards after Random House published it. RH went on to commission two more books from him and he has since gone from strength to strength. His second teen novel The Crew, published in 2003, and his follow up, Rani and Sukh is due to be published in 2004! His authentic voice, accessible writing style and subtle deadpan humour give his books a real credibility. Combine that with a keen observance of dialogue between kids - from
every racial group and you have a winning contemporary author who tells it like it is for pre-teens and teenagers. Bali's stories are based on his own experience of growing up with many racial groups
and hanging out with asian, West Indian and white friends at school. His is a true 21st century voice in children's books.
