Jane Smiley is the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Thousand Acres. Other titles include Moo and Horse Heaven. John Yau is a well-known poet, critic, and editor. He has written or contributed to monographs on the work of Jasper Johns, Andy Warhol, A. R. Penck, Pat Steir, and Chuck Close. His poetry and criticism have been published in dozens of national magazines. Vicki Hearne was an animal trainer, poet, and philosopher. Sadly, she died in 2001 while working on this book; Deborah Butterfield will be dedicated to her memory.
