Sir Patrick MacRory, son of a colonel, was educated at Cheltenham College and Trinity College, Oxford. While pursuing a successful business career he devoted his weekends and evenings to writing. His first book. Borderline, was published in 1937. This was followed by a number of best-selling military histories His other books include The Siege of Derry (1980), and Days That Are Gone, a memoir of his Ulster childhood (1983). He died in 1993.
