Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli (b. 1881) was elected Pope in October 1958. His calling of the Second Vatican Council to meet in 1961 decisively influenced the nature of Roman Catholicism. He was celebrated for promoting dialogue between Catholicism and other Christian denominations.
