David Marcus was born and raised in Cork and after university moved to live in London in 1957. He returned to live in Dublin ten years later where he has lived ever since. He founded the quarterly Irish Writing in 1946 and Poetry Ireland soon afterwards. In 1969, he became literary editor of the Irish Press, having founded the weekly 'New Irish Writing' page. He has edited over thirty anthologies of Irish poetry and short stories for both Irish and British publishers. His novels include: A Land in Flames and A Land Not Theirs. The first volume of his autobiography, Oughtobiography, was published in 2001.
