The Team of All the Macs Summary

The Team of All the Macs: The Early Days of Liverpool FC by Alan Wilson

Many football fans today believe the current trend of wealthy owners throwing their money at clubs and flooding the game with overpaid foreign players is new - it is anything but. This book covers English football's first foreign invasion in 1892. Following a boardroom row that split the defending league champions, Everton, down the middle Liverpool Football Club were formed. John Houlding, the owner of Anfield, was left in the peculiar position of having a state-of-the-art stadium but no team to play in it. Houlding armed his friend, John McKenna, with substantial funds and specific orders to build him a team within two months that would be fit to grace Anfield. The team McKenna assembled was so full of Scots that they earned the nickname the 'Team of All the Macs' and this is their tale told through match reports and newspaper stories of the day that cover the birth of Liverpool Football Club and began their love affair with Scottish players that has continued with the likes of Ian St John, Kenny Dalglish and Alan Hansen through the years.
