for the kids, the future custodians of our environment, the best book I've come across is The Great Big Book of Irish Wildlife (Through the Seasons) (hardback) by the experienced naturalist and writer, Juanita Browne. It is has great illustrations, and Juanita's way of making wildlife really interesting makes this book a must-buy by parents and grandparents

* South Side Advertiser, North Down Advertiser, East Down Advertiser, Ards Advertiser *

brimming with simple, interesting and meaningful facts about Irish wildlife ... it contains everything you would want children to know about Irish wildlife ... suitable for children aged five - 12 years old and is the kind of book you would refer to season after season to investigate changes in nature. Additionally, this book would be an invaluable resource in any school and would enhance the teaching of geography (natural environment) and science (living things) in all classes. It also contains suitable information texts about Irish animals which could be integrated into an English reading lesson and would facilitate the use of a KWL chart

For young nature enthusiasts 5+ The Great Big Book of Irish Wildlife Through the Seasons is an ideal introduction to Irish wildlife and the concept of hibernation, migration and much, much more

-- RTEjr

As the trees begin to shed their leaves, there is no better way to chart the changing seasons than with a beautiful book ... The book reads like a diary of the seasons, drawing a connection between animals, their environment and the climate shifts that mark the passing of time. Browne directs the young reader's attention to changes they can spot themselves, in their garden, local park, forest or beach, and the text is accessible, both in content and in form. There are practical tips for helping animals make the most of their habitats, as well as reminders of what animals and environments are best left alone. Barry Reynolds's illustrations are intermixed with documentary photographs that reinforce the amazing wildlife all around us, even in urban environments, and the role that children can play in ensuring they thrive.

a beautiful publication, packed full of interesting facts, great illustrations and fabulous photographs. I would loved to have had such a book (and a big hardback at that) when I was growing up, but I must admit that even now I have learned more than a few things I didn't know! ... excellent publication

-- Kate McAney of The Vincent Wildlife Trust

far from being a spotter's guide to Irish nature, it is a celebration of its wonders, providing an introduction to a vast topic and hopefully inspiring further exploration

As a child, Barry saw The Jungle Book and announced then that he intended to be an artist, and he has realised that dream, apart from a few brief flirtations with wanting to be an astronaut, a dinosaur hunter and a zoologist ... the last of which came in handy when working on The Great Big Book of Irish Wildlife.
