Born in Warwickshire in 1945, he was employed as a groom, a teacher and a clerk until the publication of his first piece of fiction in 1966. His novel In Viriconium was nominated for the Guardian fiction prize in 1982 and Climbers won the Boardman Tasker Memorial Award in 1989.
